Our kindergarten curriculum: what your child will learn at Sovička
Sovička’s curriculum is called “Me and the World” and is based on the Slovak state curriculum for kindergartens (ISCED 0). On top of that, your child gets things we believe matter for children today. At all three kindergartens, the monthly fee includes an English-speaking teacher all day, financial literacy, the EQ programme and the Jazýček šikovníček speech-therapy club. And the children spend a lot of time outdoors.
Five things every child at Sovička gets included
English all day
From morning until afternoon, your child talks with an English-speaking teacher while playing, eating and outdoors.
Financial literacy
Through play, children find out what money is worth and why saving pays off.
EQ programme
Children learn to name what they feel, handle anger and agree with their friends.
Jazýček šikovníček
Once a week, at our speech-therapy club, your child practises clear pronunciation through play.
Nature and movement
The children are outside every day, and in the Rozhýb labky programme they get to know Slovakia’s protected animals.
Financial literacy: money even a three-year-old understands
You can explain money to a small child when you have the right game. Playing shop, the children count coins, compare what costs more and find out they can only buy what they have enough for. We talk with them about the difference between what they want and what they really need, and why it is worth saving for a while for something bigger.
If you would like to carry on with money at home, take your child shopping and let them pay for one thing on their own. You will find more tips in our parent guide.
EQ programme: when your child can say what they feel
A child who can say “I’m angry” doesn’t need to hit a friend. In the EQ programme, children learn to name emotions, calm down when they are angry or sad, and look for a solution together with others. We build their confidence, empathy and cooperation, things they will need at school just as much as reading.
If your child is going through a phase of biting or hitting, read our article My child bites or hits at kindergarten: what to do.
Nature and movement every day
The children go outside in the morning and in the afternoon, whenever the weather allows. Your child also takes part in the Rozhýb labky programme, created by the DAPHNE Institute of Applied Ecology. In it, children get to know the habitats and protected animals of Slovakia, and for each animal they try an exercise inspired by the way it moves. For us, environmental education also means sorting rubbish, looking after plants and going out into nature. Why movement matters so much is explained in our article Why children need more movement and less sitting.
Learning through experience: theme days and trips
Children remember more when they can touch, try and experience things. So during the year we hold theme days and an autumn treasure hunt, and we go on trips into nature and to see animals, for example to a farm. We write more about this in our article Learning through experience.
Speech therapy: Jazýček šikovníček once a week
At the Jazýček šikovníček club, children strengthen the tongue, lips and breathing with playful exercises, which helps with clear pronunciation. It is prevention, and it is included in the monthly fee. If you are worried about your child’s pronunciation, read when it is a good idea to see a speech therapist.
School preparation and progress you know about
We prepare five- and six-year-olds for school. We practise fine motor skills for writing, listening and talking, numbers, independence and concentration with them. We follow each child’s progress through educational assessment and go through the results with you at a one-to-one consultation. You will find the details on our Pre-school year page.
Montessori elements to help independence
In the classrooms, your child can use Montessori materials. They help especially with self-care: with them your child learns to pour their own water, tidy away toys and get dressed to go outside.
We would love to show you the curriculum in person
On a visit you will see the classrooms and learning materials and find out what your child’s week would look like. The visit is free of obligation, and we fit the time around you.
